The short version. A genuinely private trading journal keeps your trades on your own device, needs no account, and uploads nothing to a company server. Kyra is the native iPhone option built this way: on-device storage, optional sync through your own private iCloud, and no sign-up. The other truly-private routes are a spreadsheet you own outright or a self-hosted open-source journal — both private, both more setup. Most commercial journals are cloud-hosted behind an account.
Privacy for a journal is really a question about where your trade history lives. Your log is a detailed record of your positions, timing, sizing, and — if you journal honestly — your psychology. That's sensitive. The moment it sits in a company's cloud behind an account, its privacy is only as good as that company's policy, breach record, and business model. On-device storage removes the question entirely: there is no server copy to leak, subpoena, sell, or train a model on.
The levels of "private"
Not every "private" claim is the same. From most to least hands-off:
- On-device, no account (native app) — trades stored on the phone, optional sync through your own cloud, no company server copy. Private by architecture, and still a real app with analysis. Kyra.
- A spreadsheet you own — a file on your machine. Maximally private and free; you build and maintain the structure, and there's no analysis unless you write it. Kyra's free journal template is a starting point.
- Self-hosted / open-source — you run the journal on your own server. Private if you maintain it; realistically a developer's path.
- Offline-first PWA — a web app that works offline and can stay "anonymous," but still syncs to a hosted account when online. Privacy-minded, not server-free.
- Cloud journal with an account — trades on the company's servers. This is most commercial journals; it's what enables broker sync, but it is not on-device privacy.

Where Kyra fits — private without giving up analysis
The usual trade-off with privacy is capability: a spreadsheet is perfectly private but does nothing on its own, while the tools that analyze your trades tend to want them in the cloud. Kyra is built to avoid that trade-off. Everything runs on the device: no account, no server, nothing uploaded, with optional sync through your iCloud (why on-device). And it still analyzes — it runs statistical tests on your own history and surfaces a behavior pattern only when the sample supports it, each shown with its sample size, entirely on the phone (how pattern detection works). You get the analysis a spreadsheet can't give you without the cloud account a hosted journal demands.
Privacy is non-negotiable
You want your trade history to stay yours — on-device, no account, nothing on a company server — and you still want real analysis of your own behavior, not just a place to type numbers.
You need sync or a web tool
Broker auto-sync fundamentally requires a cloud connection, which Kyra deliberately doesn't do. Kyra is also iPhone-only, with no web app, no trade replay, and no backtesting. If those matter more than on-device privacy, a cloud journal fits you better.
The privacy architecture — what's stored, what syncs, and what never leaves the phone — is laid out in full on why on-device, and the native-iPhone field is compared in the best iPhone trading journal guide.
